My Philosophy of Education
I believe that the purpose of education is to transfer knowledge from one generation to another in a secure and stimulating environment that permits the mental, physical, and social development of students allowing them to function and survive in society. My three goals to become an effective teacher for my students in their first years of education are: to act as a guide, to center on students’ interest, and to create cultural and ethical awareness in my students.
My first goal is to guide my students to acquire different strategies and skills permitting them to discover and build their own knowledge through problem-solving experiences. I will provide access to information where students search for knowledge, learn to find answers to their questions, and apply and integrate that knowledge to the real world situations.
My second goal, based on the standards of the Texas Education, TEKS, is to develop a curriculum around students’ interest to capture their attention and motivate their passion in the learning process. I believe that an individual learns something meaningful from every situation to which they are exposed, every person his or she meets, or from life experiences.
Finally, the most important goal for me is helping my students to learn moral values. It is with the purpose to enable students to distinguish between right and wrong and develop respect and love for their peers, their teachers, their community, their culture, their environment, their country, and themselves. I will build my classroom as a democratic atmosphere where the students’ role will be to cooperate and have tolerance, honesty, respect, and fairness, understanding that they are part of a group.
As an effective teacher, I will have the capacity to implement effective methods and strategies addressed towards the motivation and apprenticeship of each student in my classroom; to develop in my students a love of learning and problem solving abilities; to teach how to think rather than to tell them what to think; and to create an environment where my students will feel safe, free, and sure of what is expected from them. I will be a model for my students with enthusiasm and the ability to share my knowledge and to know who my students are and their aptitudes, capacities, interest, needs, and environment around them.
